- Welcome to Cache86 V5.03 for Windows and DOS
-
-
- IMPORTANT NOTICE!
-
- WELCOME QEMM USERS
- Please sure to read the section below about Quarterdeck.
-
- ONTRACK DISK MANAGER(tm)
-
- On Track Disk Manager can be used to allow a computer with
- older bios to recognize drives with over 528 meg as one
- large hard drive. It is recommended that you update your
- bios or use a controller that recognizes these larger drives
- without this software cludge. Most modern systems do not
- require a software driver to recognize today's hard drives.
-
- Cache86 is compatible with standard DOS BIOS devices. The
- Ontrack Disk Manager sets up a Non-Standard DOS partition
- using a device driver in the config.sys to access this
- partition. Cache86 is not compatible with Disk Manager. Many
- programs will not be compatible. If you are experiencing
- problems with unrecognized hard drives while using Cache86
- and Ontrack's Disk Manager (found packaged with some Seagate
- and Western Digital drives, and also on the retail shelf),
- doing a LOW level reformatting of your hard drive may be
- your only solution. Please contact your computer or hard
- drive manufacturer regarding this procedure. Be sure that
- the drive is partitioned WITHOUT the Ontrack disk manager
- installed. The benefits you will gain will far outweigh the
- inconvenience.
-
- MULTIPLE DISK CACHE PROGRAMS
-
- Using more than one disk cache will degrade performance.
- Cache86 during the Windows installation seeks out and
- removes SmartDrive from the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file,
- but not both.
-
- *WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS v3.11* CAVEAT
- 32 bit FILE access is a cache! When not on a network, but
- installed on a single machine, the IFSHELP.SYS that is
- installed in the CONFIG.SYS is a caching driver used to
- replace Smartdrive when you turn on "32 bit FILE access."
- This is a virtual cache that can cause cross-linked files on
- a small percentage of systems. Remove this line from your
- config.sys file. When on a network, turn off 32 bit file
- access via the Windows Control Panel. Also be aware that WFW
- sometimes installs Smartdrive in both the CONFIG.SYS and the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT, please confirm that both references have been
- removed. This appears to have been fixed in Windows 95.
-
-
- CAVEAT: Microsoft automatically adds Smartdrive as a line in
- your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file whenever you reinstall
- Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups from floppy. Be sure
- to remove this line after reinstalling Windows. You can use
- the SysEdit button from the Setup panel to easily check or
- edit these files.
-
- NOTE to users with multiple instances of Smartdrive:
- Cache86 Setup removes the first instance of Smartdrive that
- it detects. If you have been manually assigning parameters
- to Smartdrive after its initial installation, you will need
- to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT to remove or remark out the
- additional lines. There is no conflict if Smartdrive is not
- caching the same drives as Cache86 (for example floppies).
-
- OTHER DISK CACHE PROGRAMS
- If you are utilizing a third party disk cache other than
- SmartDrive, remove it from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
- Some other disk cache programs are:
-
- Super PC-KWIK Vcache PC-Cache
- Lightning Ncache
- Hyperdisk Norton Speed Drive
-
- The Cache86 command line looks something like this:
- C:\CACHE86\C86EXTEN S2048 D T1 B5 P100 C128
-
- NOTE: Once Cache86 is installed, you can easily access SYSEdit
- from the Cache86 Setup Panel to facilitate editing your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, and SYSTEM.INI files
-
- QUARTERDECK NOTES
-
- QEMM STEALTH DOUBLESPACE DRIVER
-
- Stealth Doublespace is a replacement for Microsoft's
- Doublespace driver and is NOT the same as loading the
- Microsoft Doublespace driver in high memory. This is a
- Quarterdeck engineered driver that has now been endorsed by
- our quality control department.
-
- If you are running QEMM and are using Quarterdeck's Stealth
- Doublespace driver, Cache86 requires the EXPCACHE:4 parameter
- to be loaded on the ST-DSPC.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file
- in order for Cache86 to run properly in expanded memory
- mode. The extended memory configuration of Cache86 does not
- require this. Cache86 will automatically load this
- parameter upon installation, if Stealth Doublespace is
- enabled.
-
- If you load Stealth Doublespace or enable Stealth
- Doublespace after installing C86 you will need to manually
- add this parameter.
-
- For more information, see the STLTH-DS.TEC file on the
- Cache86 disk.
-
- QEMM 7.5 users:
-
- Please check that your file dates for QEMM are after 10/94.
- If they are not, contact Quarterdeck for an update.
-
- GOOD NEWS: QEMM 7.5 now includes actual CACHE86 CODE! The
- Aldridge Company and Quarterdeck have combined to install
- CACHE86 API code within QEMM 7.5. This allows QEMM 7.5 to
- act as a part of CACHE86. This breakthrough makes QEMM the
- most reliable memory manager to use with our products.
-
- AFTERDARK v3.0 ENGINE (includes Simpsons among others)
- We recommend that you DO NOT USE this version of the
- product. Berkeley Systems has utilized a method of
- determining computer inactivity that is totally unacceptable
- to most civilized societies as well as the CACHE86 Panel.
-
- PROBLEM: Afterdark does not activate.
-
- SOLUTION 1: (recommended) Use another screensaver or another
- version of Afterdark.
-
- SOLUTION 2: Close the CACHE86 PANEL. Of course this
- severely reduces your performance, but you can watch the
- Afterdark screens. When you are bored with Afterdark,
- simply unload Afterdark and turn the CACHE86 PANEL back on.
-
- Berkeley Systems asks that you request an update from them
- to fix this problem.
-
- Afterdark 3.0 Trivia - Did you know that Afterdark 3.0 takes
- from 750k to 1.5 meg of RAM, even when inactive?
-
- HIGH MEMORY INSTALLATION OF Cache86
- The installation program installs Cache86 in conventional
- memory and gives you the option to load it in high memory.
- See Help, Loading Cache86 High for additional information.
-
- CYRIX and TI CHIP CACHING
- There is no conflict if you are using Cyrix's or TI's chip
- caching, however, initialization software should be loaded
- before Cache86 in the Autoexec.bat file. See manual page
- 47 for additional information.
-
- PRINT CACHE
- There is no conflict with Cache86 if you are using the
- print spooler, Print Cache. You should load it after
- Cache86 in the Autoexec.bat file. Systems will vary,
- however, we have found the best performance gain using
- Print Cache is generally to assign it to use disk space as
- opposed to extended or expanded memory. Cache86's
- utilization of RAM is more efficient, and therefore we are
- able to enhance Print Cache's performance when it is
- assigned to use hard disk space.
-
- SOUND ADD-ON
- Starting in version 5.01 we added sound options. These options
- let you install voices for various functions within Cache86
- for Windows. The sound option will only work with Windows
- 3.1 and above. If you have a sound board, the setup will
- sense it and allow you to directly install the voices from
- the Preferences Panel. If you are using only the speaker on
- your PC, we supply the Microsoft PC Speaker driver for free!
- Simply follow the install screens and refer to the context
- sensitive help if you have further questions.
-
- SYSTEM RESOURCES DISPLAY
- You can now display a real time read-out of your current
- available Windows system resources. This read-out displays
- on the Cache86 Control Panel Captions line, to the right of
- "help" and is displayed as a percentage. It also displays
- on the animated Cache86 icon. Set this option in Panel
- Preferences.
-
- MODULE LIST
- To display a listing of the current modules in memory,
- select Hash Table from the Cache menu on the Cache86 Panel,
- then click on the button on the window. Double clicking a
- name on the list will display additional memory information.
- See Help for details.
-
- VERSION NUMBER
- The version number displayed on the Cache86 Control Panel
- represents the version of the DOS kernel that Cache86
- Windows is addressing. Please use "Help" and "About" to
- see the specific version of the Control Panel, e.g.
- v5.03.
-
- WINDOWS ERROR MESSAGE
- Unable to write to WIN.INI. This message occasionally
- appears during installation. To correct the error, click
- on Continue instead of Restart after exiting this Readme.
- Then proceed as follows.
-
- If you previously altered the file attributes so the
- WIN.INI file is read-only or designated as a system file,
- return the attributes to normal and try again.
-
- If you have not previously altered the file attributes, the
- message may also display, if you have previously installed
- Cache86 in a different directory. Windows will not allow
- the same program to be loaded twice upon startup. To
- correct this problem, click on the Cache86 Setup icon.
- Select None in the Type option. Click on OK, then
- Continue. Rerun Setup from the Cache86 floppy.
-
- TECHNICAL SUPPORT
- Feel free to call our Technical Support department for
- additional information. We can provide the best support if
- you call while you are operating the computer.
-
- DE-INSTALLING CACHE86
- We are confident you will be pleased with Cache86 for
- Windows and DOS. If you ever wish to remove Cache86, select
- the Type of Cache option on the Cache86 Setup Panel. Choose
- None. Then restart your system. Cache86 removes the load
- instruction from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and WIN.INI files.
-
- The WIN.INI file may contain two entries. If you select
- Auto Load Cache86 Panel, the LOAD= line will be changed.
- Cache86 always appends a [Cache86 Panel] section. These
- entries are deleted using the above method.
-
- Run the Setup icon to re-install Cache86.
-

- UTILITY SOFTWARE FROM THE ALDRIDGE COMPANY UNLEASHES
- THE POWER OF YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTERS
-
-
- PreCursor
-
- PreCursor is a state of the art DOS menu interface program designed from the
- user's point of view. Each user's menu can be fully customized to suit
- individual needs. With its built-in utilities even the most inexperienced
- user can execute simple DOS commands without being taught.
-
- PreCursor is incredibly simple to set up and use. To create a menu, only
- two items are required: a title to appear on the screen and the executable
- file name. PreCursor automatically locates the program and logs the path.
- To run a program just press its corresponding number. There is no memory
- overhead problem when PreCursor runs a program, it uses only 85 bytes of
- memory.
-
- Passwords can be assigned to individual menu items, menu pages, DOS, and
- Services for security or control of the end-users. User IDs can keep track
- of who is doing what and for how long. Project IDs can record the time
- spent on a project or client for billing purposes. The IDs can also be
- validated to restrict access to the entire system.
-
- Some more advanced features of PreCursor include special control commands
- for displaying a window of files, directories, or drives to select from.
- The user can create custom prompt messages and help text for each menu
- item. There is also a dynamic menu generator for automatically creating
- menus on multiple machines.
-
- PreCursor works equally well in network, partitioned, remote, and
- micro-to-mainframe environments. Retail price is $96.00.
-
-
- Tree86
-
- Tree86 is an incredibly powerful simple-to-use file and directory management
- tool that is especially useful on systems with large or multiple drives.
-
- When run, Tree86 displays the subdirectories on the logged drive in a
- graphical tree format along with comprehensive statistics of the disk and
- memory. Command options are listed along the top of the screen with pull-
- down menus utilized as needed.
-
- Tree86 features include instant access to single or multiple drives, color
- configuration, EGA/VGA support, full optional mouse support, and text search
- capability. With a few simple keystrokes, you can perform operations (copy,
- erase, xcopy, move, backup) on groups of files or restructure the tree. With
- a single stroke, you can access a DOS-like environment (TreeDOS) that
- provides a buffer of previous commands and a pure ASCII editor that contains
- a host of word processor-like capabilities.
-
- When running a program from Tree86 or while in TreeDOS, Tree86 swaps out
- code and data, leaving less than 5k in conventional memory. You configure
- Tree86 to swap out to expanded or extended memory, or to hard disk, thus
- supplemental memory is not required. Tree86 supports large, network, SCSI
- and ESDI drives. Retail price is $94.95.
